Are you ready for your best night’s sleep?
If it is a choice for astronauts, some of the most scientifically educated people around, shouldn’t it be the right choice for you? Developed under a NASA contract in the 1970’s, the concept of memory foam was created to improve cushioning. And that is just what it does in its pillow form. It cushions your head and neck and allows your pillow to conform to you, not the other way around.
So many choices, so many benefits
That being said, there are more than just one type of pillow to choose from, so many people do not know how to choose the best memory foam pillow for them. On the market today there are a few key categories to choose from. Knowing the difference between these categories can help you to make an informed decision about what is best for you so you can get to your goal of a great night’s sleep. While there are many types of memory foam pillows available, there are a few key types to keep in mind when looking for the right one for you.
There are traditional pillows that are in the shape and style of the common bed pillows, for those that want the feel of a conventional pillow. Contoured pillows are similar, but dip down in the center area and are best for those who sleep on their back by giving maximum support for the neck while in that position. A third type is a neck roll which is a great for people with neck and back problems and is just as the name suggests; a cylindrical shaped pillow.
I was once a skeptic, but not anymore
Suffering from neck and back pain is no joke, especially when it affects the much needed sleep your body desires; and in the end, is a vicious cycle feeding off of the cause and effect. No sleep equals more pain, and more pain equals no sleep. I speak from experience on this topic having suffered for decades with chronic neck pain and many sleepless nights. That is until I found a memory foam pillow that fit my body just like a glove.
I was a skeptic at first, especially since the pillow looked anything but comfortable, but I was open to giving it a shot to try to get some relief. I won’t lie, the first night took a little getting used to the sensation that I wasn’t surrounded by a big puffy pillow. But by night two and the days and weeks that followed, I found myself telling my husband that I wished I had tried it sooner. No longer was I waking up with a stiff neck or backaches and what an amazing feeling that was. In turn, my husband decided to get one as well and now we never sleep without them.
The support that memory foam gives you is probably one of the most important factors to giving you a restful night’s sleep. The concept of memory foam allows less pressure build up around your joints as it contours to the unique shape of your head and neck. Rather than a one size fits all concept of most pillows, memory foam literally becomes one with each individual that sleeps on it.
That individualized contouring assists in keeping your spine aligned, often resulting in much less pain for those who try it. It also, similar to it’s initial job on spacecraft, absorbs motion and creates a much more stable support.
When my husband and I were first married, I would feel every single movement he made in the bed. If he would turn over, my head would bounce around with the mattress movement. I can, in all honesty, say, that with a memory foam pillow, I now do not feel his movements nearly as much. Being that my head and neck are so stabilized by the pillow and the pillow absorbs any of the impact made by his movement, I barely move when he does. Another way that memory foam has allowed me to sleep better and suffer from less pain and tiredness.
Let your pillow do the work for you
How often do you find yourself trying to fluff and re-fluff your traditional bed pillows? Flipping them over from side to side, pumping them up in the middle or punching to get just the right fit for your head in the middle of the pillow. All of that work should tell you something.
You are working to make something fit to you that never truly will mold to your unique shape and contour. It is a futile attempt to make something feel comfortable when in just a few short hours, it probably will have lost that shape and you will have to work at it again. Does anybody really want to work so hard for a good night’s sleep? I know I don’t.
Try one today, you won’t regret it!
Many people will look at or feel memory foam pillows and will think that they are too firm or hard for them to truly be comfortable. As I mentioned earlier, I was one of those skeptics. The material really is daunting at first, especially when you are used to the cloud like pillows that many of us are used to using our whole lives. It is definitely true that they don’t have the fluffy, bouncy, super soft texture that traditional pillows do.
And they probably aren’t the best pillow to use for a pillow fight, lest you knock the other person out! But I think that many are surprised by the fact that even though the exterior initially seems unusually firm; that firmness is what your body has been craving. Your body works hard all day long, and when it is time to rest, it doesn’t want to have to continue to work.
So, rather than forcing your head and neck to continue to support the rest of the body, give the memory foam a try at giving you the support you need.
